In Lesson 1, these drills will not be performed as a line drill. They will be taught from right Zenkutsu Dachi.

Otoshi-Uchi [C,K] (Jodan-Uchi, Tate-Uchi) (Overhead Strike) Can be done forward and backward as a line drill. Must switch lead hand by bringing Bo tip back to anchor shoulder while moving in. Note: If target is top of opponent’s head, Bo is anchored under your armpit, otherwise it is anchored at your hip .

  1. Grasp the Bo with Jun-Nigiri, right hand uppermost. Assume right Zenkutsu Dachi.
  2. Thrusting forward and down, use the upper or right section of the Bo to deliver a forceful strike to your opponent’s head.

Tsuki-Komi [C,K] (Maede-Tsuki) (Front Hand Thrust) Can be done as a line drill. Must switch grip with both hands as you bring Bo tip back to anchor shoulder while moving in. Inward twist with both wrists while executing.

  1. Grasp Bo with Jun-Nigiri, right hand uppermost. Assume right Zenkutsu Dachi.
  2. Use both hands to stab the upper or right end of the Bo horizontally into your opponent’s solar plexus.

Yoko-Uke [K] (Soto-Uke – Outer Block) Can be done as a line drill. Must switch grip with both hands as you bring Bo tip back to anchor shoulder while moving in.

  1. Grasp your Bo with Jun-Nigiri, right hand uppermost. Assume right Zenkutsu Dachi.
  2. Deflect an attack from the right by moving the upper section of your Bo from the inside to the outside (that is, from left to right).

COMBINATION 1 [R]
Stepping in Right Zenkutsu Dachi. Overhead strike to head (Otoshi-Uchi), jab (ski – Tsuki-Komi), fend off (Yoko-Uke inside to outside), left hand is on your belt, right hand is in front of your chest, moving the right hand in a small counter clockwise circle, back to Yoi.
